FQA’s -Money and Your Non Profit

9/13/2013

Most people think I want a Non Profit. Or if only I had grant  money- then I would be set. Unfortunately, that is not the
complete story and it does not work that easy!

You must be dedicated to start a Non Profit; there is work that has to be done BEFORE you start receiving grant money.

I am going to make the steps as simple as possible for you on how to start a Non Profit and then I will answer some questions that everyone wants to know the answer too.
  1. Decide what your Non Profit will do? What service will you be providing? Is  your nonprofit needed?
  2. Establish your Board of Directors.
  3.  Reserve your name with the Secretary of State.
  4.  File Articles of Incorporation- pay fees.
  5.  Create By-Laws and submit to the State. Apply for an EIN.
  6. Apply for 501C3 status with IRS (Form 123) pay fees.
  7.  Apply for exception for State Corporate  income tax and franchise tax (if applicable).
  8.  Workers Compensation Insurance- if you have four (4) or more Full time or part-time employees.
  9.  File Unemployment Taxes if those same employees work a total of 20  weeks in a calendar year.
  10.  Ready to get started!

Non Profits do the following:
  1. Deliver a needed services
  2. Educate the public on vital issues
  3. Find solutions
  4. Work within your culture
  5. Engage people in the community
  6. Provide a voice for the voiceless
  7. Improve government policies
  8. Providing faith-based activities

 FQA’s

 1.      How   soon will I be able to find and receive grant  money?
a.       Researching  for a grant is a FULL TIME job! It  is something you must do every day.
b.     Once  you find a grant- you must apply and  IF you are award the grant money- it is allocated to do specific things. IT IS NOT YOURS TO SPEND FREELY!

2.      How  much money will I receive from a grant to pay myself?
a.       It  depends on the grant and if salary is allowed. When you apply for a grant it  will give you GREAT detail on how they want you to spend THEIR  MONEY.

3.      Can  someone guarantee me that I will be awarded a  grant?
a.       NO.  You are competing with other organizations. The best thing you can do is to
follow their instructions and pay attention to every  detail.

4.      How  do I really get started?
a.       Easy-  follow the steps I gave above. OR
b.     Google-  How to Start a Non Profit.   You can include the state you are living in to give you the guidelines for that
  state.

So I have given some very basic steps on how to get started and  what to do.

What Are The Differences Between Non Profit and For Profit?

8/13/2013

The difference between the two really depends on the scope of services that  you want to offer and how you want to offer them.  I am going to make this as  SIMPLE as possible!

Nonprofit does not earn money (profits) for its owners.  ALL MONEY (profit)  earned by or donated to the organization MUST be used in pursing the  organization’s objectives. A nonprofit usually provides a public service.

An important thing to remember about nonprofit organizations is that no one  can guarantee you grant money unless they are the ones actually giving you the  money. A very SIMPLE example of how it works is this:

1. Find a grant
2. Following the instructions and do exactly what the  grantees is asking for
3. Submit your documentation
4. WAIT on a  response

That’s it! The final decision is up to the grantor! No one can promise you  that your grant proposal will be approved. I made that mistake and spent well  over $1500.00 for a packet and at the end of the program I was left with a stack
of paper and no grant money.

IF you want your nonprofit to solely depend on  grant money you will need someone FULLTIME to research for grants it is not just  a one-time thing!

Establishing a nonprofit will take a great deal of detail worked and being  very descriptive on the services that you want to offer to your community. There  are fees associated with creating a nonprofit; the fee amount depends on the
state that you live in.

For profit business is just the opposite. If you want to be a sole  entrepreneur then you are finished with establishing your business. What does  that mean, it means that you have chosen not to incorporate, form a partnership,  or become a LLC. You have chosen to be your only employee! Can you change this  status after your business has grown absolutely!

Once you change the status of your for profit organization there are fees  associated with filing the necessary documents.

These are just some very basic difference between a nonprofit and for profit  organizations.
