Communication is what we do all day. I recently changed careers and during my transition period, I reflected on how information is communicated and distributed from the top down in organizations. When information is shared from a corporate level it is dispersed based on the general assumption that the person on the receiving end has a certain level of comprehension and education to understand what they have read. Let’s start with my Three C’s of Communication: clarity, confidently and correctly, all these aspects need to present when communicating on any level. The organization has a responsibility to be clear on what they want to communicate, confident in what they are saying and they must confirm the information being shared is correct. However, during my transition up the career ladder, I realized there is an unspoken 4th rule of Communication: Comprehension! Allow me to explain how comprehension is part of my Three C’s of Communication.
I educated myself as a manager working with front-line employees; they did not always understand what I understood. As managers, we automatically assume that all employees read and understand on our level. Once I became aware that most of my employees were unable to comprehend the overall communication that the organization had shared; I decided to take the time to frame the corporate communication into something my front line employees could understand and carry out.
SHRM in 2013 reported that the cost of poor communication in organization’s cost companies an average of $62.4 million per year because of inadequate communication between employees (Buhler, Worder, 2013) THAT IS INSANE!! As an organization can you imagine losing this much money because your employees are not able to comprehend the information they receive? Precisely what is inadequate information? Inadequate information is when an employee is unable to understand and carry out a task that has been communicated to them.
Organizations must understand that while the Three C’s are essential to communication comprehension is the most important. I recommend that organizations find creative ways to offer the same information on different comprehension levels to their employees. A base line to follow would be to provide communication on a basic 5th grade reading comprehension level. This will ensure that most employees will be able to understand, comprehend and communicate out to the organizations customers and clients.
Front-line employees are responsible for communicating an organizations’ message to clients and customers, however, if they are unable to comprehend the information they are receiving, it will cause customer & client abrasion. This leads us right back to our discussion of organizations providing inadequate information thus costing organizations millions of dollars each year.
I recommend that organizations take a moment and develop corporate communications on different comprehension levels. Just this one basic change will save the organizations millions of dollars in employee time, disgruntled customers and clients. Think of this way, your front-line employees represent the organization in every way, it is worth the investment to create more documentation so that employees are able to comprehend, present and carry out the organization's goals.

I am a firm believer that there are two types of worker mentalities in the workplace. One is the worker and one is the leader.
A worker will show up every day and work their designated hours, seek nothing more from their place of employment, and may often complain about the work load. A leader shows up looking for ways for advancement, offer fewer excuses
and generally the leader is not part of the crowd.
A worker will sometimes complain about the tasks that needs to be completed, the work that is required and the
management staff. The complaining worker has to have an audience around when voicing their opinion and often is
inclined to tell management on how to run the organization differently and more effectively.
The leader will meet and exceed the expectations of their position, look for other ways to be a team player, and understands that to carry out something different you have to be do something different.
The difference begins in the response.
Ask yourself: Are you a worker? Or are you a leader?
The answer to this question will decide if you are an entrepreneur, a business owner, or a nonprofit leader.
It is my belief that if you are a complainer at work you will not service your customers properly! Your focus will not be that the customer is always right, nor will it be focused on providing the best possible service. It will instead
be focused on the amount of work you will have to do for just one client, or focusing on the reasons why you make not like the client instead of providing them a great service.
There is absolutely no problem with being a worker however, ask yourself if you can affectively service your customer and or community with a workers attitude?
Today, I want you to keep track of your responses to those around you at work. Are you part of the crowd? What does your speech say about you?

How many of us have ready the opening of a blog, email or envelope that promises you that in 30 days we can be wealthy and have our own business?
I know I have read one just yesterday!
So here is the deal- it is not going to happen in 30 days. Making your dreams a reality is going to take work, focus, work, concentration and did I mention WORK !!!!
This how it works, you have a great idea and you want to make it into a business, or turn a profit on it, or you want to start a nonprofit so that you can help other people. Great!! Now it is time to put all those ideas on paper and really decide what direction you want to go in.
Ideas are great- but until they become reality- they are just ideas.
You have to want your dream or idea so bad that it is all you want to work on or think about and talk about. You will not mind putting in the work that is required.
If you find yourself making excuses as to why you can’t work on your business then you may not be ready to make your dream a reality.
When you’re truly ready- you will make no excuses- you will find answers!

Let’s make that Dream a Reality
Thank you to everyone that emailed your questions in! I greatly appreciate it. I thought I would share some of the questions that I received the names have been omitted!
Do you really have experience helping people start their own business?
Yes! I have helped friends and families for over 10 years in some form or fashion understand their passion and turn it into a business or help them set up a non-profit.
I’m afraid to start my business- exactly what is my first step?
Being afraid is OK it is when you let that fear STOP YOU- that is NOT OKAY. The first step is to call for your FREE 30 MINUTE CONSULTATION. Always put your ideas on paper! It is easier to keep up with and it makes it a reality when
you see it written down.
I just need to find a grant that is going to give me money to fix my house and maybe go back to
Researching for a grant is easy. Applying for a grant and actually receiving one is NOT EASY. There are a ton
of grants out there that may help you do what you would like to do HOWEVER; you must do the ground work
FIRST. Meaning you have to be willing to do the work required for the grant.
My friends are always asking for me to “hook them up".
Well if you continue to ‘hook up’ your friends they are the only ones benefiting from your hard work! At some point you have ask yourself the question why are you just giving your information away?
I really want to start something but I don’t have the money and I have can’t afford to pay someone to help me.
There are things you can do first. For example your business plan, organizing your thoughts and ideas of how you want to run the business what product or services you are going to offer. All the while you can be saving for the things that you will need money for (i.e. licenses, forms, and applications).
These are just a few of the great questions that I received.
I ask that you do just one thing before the day ends….OR before your begin your day
Take a pen and paper and write down ONE THING that you are going to DO DIFFERENTLY TODAY THAN YOU DID YESTERDAY! It can be as small or as big as you choose. For some saying fewer curse words than the day before or
perhaps, not complaining the first 10 minutes you’re at work.
I promise if you do this exercise every day you will start to notice change in your thinking, your attitude and most of all your ACTIONS!

What are you afraid of? What keeps you up at night? Is it the thought that you will never truly accomplish your dreams? Or that you are accomplishing someone else’s dreams?
“If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs” Dhirubhai Ambani
I love this quote!
It really is that simple.
So what are you afraid of? Perhaps that you will succeed and someone will actually require something of you? As long as you are a dreamer and continue to talk about what you are going to do… then you are safe... no one will expect you do anything at all.
Often we are afraid of ourselves and success. It is the reason we procrastinate, why we criticize others when they finally start achieving their dreams, it is the reason we are 20 years down the road with a great idea and that’s all we have - an idea.
So what do you do when you are afraid? First, you have to decide if the fear is going continue to stop you or if you are going to do something about it?
Often the first step is the hardest it is with that step that all other steps are defined.
I have been there and understand that fear- that someone may actually look to you to do what you say you can do! However, if you are confident enough to read this- then you are confident enough to schedule your FREE 30 MINUTE CONSULTATION!
Nothing is better than FREE –and who will know besides you and me?

How many have heard that phrase and wondered what it meant?
It is a wonderful dream to be your own boss. How many of you have day dreamed about no longer having to listen to someone else give you orders on how they like things done, make coffee for someone, sit through boring meetings, or commute to work?
I know some of us, me included, always thought we could do a better job than our supervisor or manager? Especially when they made stupid mistakes or took too long to make a decision –but as employees we had all the
Actually, being your own boss is harder and requires more work than working for someone else.
There is a price to be paid when it comes to being the boss. The cost is often your sleep, your time, and sometimes making the wrong decision. When you are the boss, owner, manager, CEO you are the final decision maker.
Every decision that you make affects your business IMMEDIATELY!
I have had days like that when I simply have to say “ I am paying the cost to be the boss.”
It means living with a life altering decision for your business that will affect your family or finances, it means having others look to you constantly for the answer and to make that ‘right now’ decision.
Suddenly the tables have turned and you are the leader. So what do you do when you find yourself paying the cost to be the boss?
1. Stop and think about the decision you are going to make. Is it going to affect your business now or later?
2. Do you have to make the decision now?
3. Who is the going to effect? Who is involved?
4. Research and make sure you have all the necessary information first
5. When in doubt- seek someone else out. There is nothing wrong with asking for advice from a mentor or trusted advisor.
Consultants or business coaches, often fall under the category of trusted advisor or mentor. It is my job to help you navigate through some of those decision making process. Having a consultant around provides you with a level of confidence that someone else has been where you are and understands the frustrations you are facing.
